Rally to the Sun in Beautiful Montana

It may seem a little early to plan for an event that happens in September of 2008 but when it's a vintage car rally, planning ahead is essential. So if you live anywhere in the western USA or Canada (or even if your home is somewhere over an ocean) give serious thought to the Going to the Sun Rally, which begins and ends in Montana. That state has some of the best driving roads in North America, light traffic, and a reasonably generous speed limit. To say nothing of the spectacular scenery! Last year's rally featured a route of 1300 miles including a detour into the Canadian Rockies
, involved 40 wonderful cars and guest "star" George Follmer, who's driven in Indy Cars, NASCAR, Formula 1, the World Endurance Championship, Can-Am, Trans-Am, and IMSA. According to the organisers "this vintage vehicle rally celebrates vintage automobiles and the beauty and the freedom of the state of Montana and its people. The rally has been designed to provide a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for the participants and the people encountered along the way." Everything from hotels to meals to Montana Highway Patrol assistance is arranged as part of the entry fees, 100% of which goes to charities. All you have to do is bring (or ship) your car and simply show up. Last year's entrants included two 1957 Jaguar XKSS's, a sherbet-green 1945 Delahaye 135 MS, and "Old Yeller #1," the race car reportedly built from junkyard parts by Dick Morgensen in 1954. That's it above, as seen from the driver's seat. You can read a full account of the 2007 Going to the Sun Rally in Sports Car Market Magazine by clicking here.
