To some eyes it was just a tiny car with a competition pedigree. More perceptive viewers recognised this Mini as one of the great all-time rally winners in a sport where roadholding, braking, steering response, balance and durability count more than sheer power. Britain's Mini was one of the best: for example, DJB 93B was the winner of the RAC Rally in 1965 with Finland's Rauno Aaltonen at the wheel. The following year it took top honors at the Scottish Rally with Tony Fall driving. It was then retired and remained untouched for 30 years. Ten years ago a complete restoration was done, faithful to the original specification in every detail. After which DJB 93B took part in in a number of shows and competitive events while still showing only 4,825 miles on the odometer. When the car went up the ramp for "Bonham's auction in Warwickshire" on March 24 the hammer price of $197K was twice the pre-sale estimate. Nothing mini about that.
