Then a young man, I can remember when the Buick Skylark was announced in 1953. I was stunned by it's Euro-style beauty and still am today. So it was no surprise to me when, at Russo and Steele's 2006 Scottsdale auction, this 1954 example sold for $181,500, even though the 53 Skylark was more attractive. Only 836 Buick Skylarks were produced in 1964, possibly because of styling changes demanded by chief designer harley Earl, who added big chrome fins to the rear fenders. Nevertheless it was fully equipped with leather interior, full power equipment, special ornamentation, and those stunning Kelsey Hayes wire wheels that nicely filled the open wheel wells. Buick claimed the Skylark was GM's answer to the European sports car but with 4300 pounds to push around corners and a 0-60 time of 13 seconds it was merely a pretty pretender. Fully restored in 2003, the yellow beauty has won several awards at national Buick meets.
