Remembering the Sunday Drive

54 Pontiac Catalog

Folks of a certain age will recall that peculiarly North American ritual known as "the Sunday Drive." Yes, there was a time when we'd get off the couch on a Sunday morning and head for the country with a carload of friends or family. It was a time to explore, absorb the gentle beauties of the countryside, perhaps have a picnic, and rediscover the simple pleasures of driving. Few people do that these days, not only because there are so many distractions but because it takes so darn long to get there on our overcrowded expressways. But if you own a vintage automobile you're not in a hurry anyway... so why not take your aged beauty on the road and drive it as it was meant to be driven? To encourage you to do exactly that, Coker Tires president Corky Coker is launching the annual Coker's Sunday Drive contest. Each year he will present the Coker Golden Tire Award to two people who drive and show their collector cars while influencing other enthusiasts to do the same. You can enter (after October 31st) simply by sending a few photos and a brief description to the Coker's Web site. Thanks to Hemmings newsletter for the update and to McLellan's Automotive Literature for this shot of a charming 1954 Pontiac catalog.
