It's not unusual to spot a Chrysler Airflow (or its DeSoto sibling) at an auction. Normally these would be 4-door sedans, much maligned for their unpopular "streamlined design." Often forgotten is that the Airflow was also available as a 2-door, which makes the appearance of this 1934 Chrysler Airflow CU Coupe at RM's Vintage Motor Cars of Meadowbrook auction a rare sighting. Note that I've chosen to show a rear-3/4 view rather than the front because it's the latter's massive waterfall grille that in my opinion detracts from the car's appearance. Seen from this angle the aerodynamic shape is much more appealing. Click here for photos of the front, engine, and interior. Though their styling may have been criticised, Airflows were very advanced for their era, featuring unit construction, recessed headlights, hydraulic brakes, and chassis engineering that moved the engine forward so that rear seat passengers were placed ahead of the rear axle instead of riding on top. A mere 732 coupes were produced in 1934, making the estimated price of $65-80,000 seem reasonable enough. The auction takes place July 31-Aug 01 and is run in conjuction with the prestigious Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance.
