As We See Things
by Philip Powell on June 5, 2007

I can't believe I'm writing an article about hamburgers, having all but given them up in an almost meat-free diet aimed at surviving to age 108 (a decision I made on turning 54). A cyber-buddy dating back to my "glory days" as About.com's car guy, Harley Ferguson, who now lives in Japan where it must be difficult to order a burger in a sushi bar, alerted me to a burger drive-in when he was still in the USA. His favorite was known as the "Big Burger" in Chickasha, Oklahoma. Harley tells me "their Root Beer in ice-cold frosted mugs was great... our drive-in movie was the Chief Drive-in about 5 miles south on US 81." Well, Harley, apparently you can still get a great burger in Oklahoma, as this Web site reveals, but it isn't the Big Burger from your younger days. Still, there's something about cruising and hamburgers that unites as all, although searching for images of burger joints convinced me they are universally ugly except for Bert Monroy's rendering seen here. Where would you, our viewers, drive for a great hamburger? Use the Comments box below to tell us about your burger drive-in experiences.

The Big Burger wasn't designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, but it was a whole lot nicer than those in the "Oklahoma Hamburger" web site. I'll try to find a picture.
