Small, but She Can Run With the Big Boys

Small, but She Can Run With the Big Boys

I’m an unabashed lover of small cars. And small women, too. (Well, not that small!) The first and only time I saw an Amilcar was in a parade preceding the Sebring, Florida, 12-hour race in 1963. It was also my first exposure to a classic car event, as they were relatively rare in those days. The Amilcar was being driven by the famous woman racer and journalist Denise McCluggage and while I didn’t get close enough to be enamored of Ms. McCluggage (who is still driving and writing, by the way) I immediately fell in love with the Amilcar, a very light and sporty 2-seater of the 1920′s. Forty-three years later I got to see one again, this time driving on California Highway 1 in the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance. As you’ll note from the photo, she’s a pretty skinny old gal but seen from a side view, quite racy. Approaching us is a 1925 Amilcar CGS Duval Sport owned by Ed Godshalk. Be sure to check the concours category for more posts from our continuing coverage of the Monterey Classic Car extravaganza.

  • Who’s Amal?

Amilcar was a French maker of small, lightweight cars from 1921 to 1939. You can learn more about it at this Wikipedia post: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amilcar
