Automotive Art
by Philip Powell on April 12, 2006
I've never collected postage stamps, though I do have a couple featuring Canadian steam locomotives plus a few of the somewhat-rare Gilles Villeneuve F1 stamps. But I'm sorely tempted to lay out a mere $7.40 for a set released in 2005 which the US Postal Service identifies with the rather awkward title, America on the Move 50s: Sporty Cars. The five stamps, featuring a 53 Studebaker Starliner, 53 Corvette, 54 Kaiser Darrin, 52 Nash Healey and 55 ford thunderbird, were created by legendary automotive illustrator Art Fitzpatrick, whose works were often seen in car ads of the period. You can also purchase a signed print by the 86-year-old artist from his own site, fitz-art.com.
