During a recent tour of BC’s beautiful Okanagan wine country my driving buddy Mel Satok and I unexpectedly “discovered” the Kettle Valley Steam Railway. We knew the Kettle Valley roadbed east of Okanagan Lake had been turned into a hiking and biking trail; in fact Mel and I walked some of the trail in tribute to its past and our current old guy fitness. How far? Don’t ask… it was a very hot day. But we had no idea, until advised by the Penticton Visitor’s Center, that a few miles of the original railway on the west side had been restored and was offering rides behind a 1924 Canadian Pacific 2-4-0 steam locomotive. Our schedule didn’t allow for a journey but we did enjoy a few moments watching and listening as the train puffed into the past. The only thing missing was a Model T Depot Hack (later known as the original station wagon).
