Sunshine and Classics Perform at Amelia Island

Bell's Racers

Ah, yes, that wish list. Amelia Island's Concours and RM auction have come and gone and once again I'm asking myself why I shivered in Scottsdale when I could have been sunning in Florida. The fellows at "Sports Car Market" were there (they were also at Scottsdale in January… those guys have larger travel budgets) and tell us in their newsletter that $20m changed hands in the auction and 275 cars were on display.

Keith Martin's SCM also has a "nice little slide show" on the site so if you'd like a glimpse at what you missed, take a look. Some of those cars, particularly ex-racer Derek Bell's mounts, were absolutely fabulous. Looking at the sandy white beach and warm blue ocean in the background, I can only say that come next March this is where you'll find me. Not that I don't enjoy Scottsdale – the scenery is gorgeous and the architecture spectacular – but like most Pacific Northwesterners, I'm seeking sunlight in the winter. It had the audacity to snow in Phoenix while I was there!

I've wanted to sail on a cruise ship since the days when they were called ocean liners, so combining Amelia Island's classic cars with a cruise out of Fort Lauderdale or Miami is my idea of a winter vacation. Come next year…
