Concours
by Philip Powell on August 20, 2006
Unlike the concrete bobsled runs of modern Champ Car circuits, in the years following WW2, road racing in America took place on narrow roads with little or no protection for drivers and spectators. Eventually they would be banned on safety grounds but not before they became training grounds for future champions like Phil Hill, Carroll Shelby, Masten Gregory, and British ex-pat Ken Miles. They also offered an opportunity for local builders to display their talents in competition with the Europeans. Among the most revered of those events were the Pebble Beach road races, utilising portions of what we now know as "17 Mile Drive." For the 2006 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the producers chose to honor the "Cars That Raced in the Forest." Some of those historic racers are seen in this photo. Meanwhile I'd like to remind you that by scrolling down you'll see more of our Pebble Beach/Monterey coverage, and even more if you click on "Concours" in the categories list on the right.

Is that 14B a J3 Allard or one of the many specials that looked like the Allards?
It has been a long, long time.
Rest assured it's the real thing, not a look-alike. Sidney Allard knew how to make a great, if somewhat brutish, road racer.
