The Truth About (Yesterday's) Cars
Filed in archive Books by Philip Powell on July 20, 2007

It's a good thing I have no more shelf space in my little condo or I'd be loading up on the used books available from McLellans Automotive. Take this one, for example. Printed in the days when road tests were properly called road tests and not "test drives" or the currently popular "reviews," it contains a summary of everything Road & Track tested in 1959. The magazine, in those years, favoured imports for their economy, sensible size and sporty handling; a far cry from today's publication which worships at the Holy Grail of performance and super cars. Some 40 road tests are included plus a dozen luxury classic models. Far too many to list but here's a sample of a few all-but-forgotten names:
AC Aceca-Bristol, Auto Union 100, Borgward TS Coupe, Citroen ID-19, Datsun 1000, Fiat-Abarth 750, Jaguar XK-150, Mercedes 300SL, MG-A Twin-Cam, Porsche 1600 Super, Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud, Sunbeam Rapier, Opel Rekord, Peugeot 403, and a handful of Americans including the Chrysler 300-D, Lincoln Continental Mark III, Plymouth Fury. Plenty of photos and illustrations to stimulate one's imagination or perhaps lust for acquisition of one of these cars; thankfully the 128-page Road Test Annual can be yours from McLellans for a mere $25.
