The Ultimate Driving Experience

C-Type and XK Jaguar

California’s Highway 1 is without question one of the world’s finest driving roads. Wandering among the high hills, valleys and sand dunes south from Carmel, if offers spectacular views of cliffs and ocean. And because it provides an endless series of curves, with just the occasional straight for a bit of speed, this highway is an automobile driver’s paradise. Imagine, then, the sight and sound of 100 superb classic cars passing by as you stand at roadside and watch. That’s exactly what I was doing, there to view and photograph the 60-mile Tour d’Elegance, a relatively new feature of the Pebble Beach Concours in which competitors are invited to drive their cars, lured by the fact that in the event of a tie, extra points will go to a car that participates in the tour. Approaching in this shot, a 1952 Jaguar C-Type race car and a 1951 Jaguar XK120 LT2 race-modified roadster.
