The Worst Place to Sit in a Rolls Royce? Not if the Bar is Well-Stocked

The Worst Place to Sit in a Rolls Royce? Not if the Bar is Well-Stocked

A few blogs ago I featured the 2009 Louisville Kentucky Concours d’Elegance, thanks to our intrepid but unpaid reporter, Nigel Matthews, who was there as a judge. Nigel has now forwarded the updated Concours Web page. Meanwhile I can’t help but comment on this extraordinary Rolls Royce, which must be the ultimate indulgence of its time. Look at the overall length of the car then compare it with the compartment at the back, a snuggle space for two or possibly three passengers to enjoy their champagne while totally ignoring the chauffeur, who must have felt the Spirit of Ecstasy mascot atop the radiator was merely a guide to the whereabouts of the front end… out there somewhere. Absurd though it may be this Roller is beautiful if you regard it as rolling sculpture, especially with its brass trim and what looks like either basket-weave or wood panelling on the passenger compartment. Ironically, the chauffeur had a more comfortable seating position than his masters, who sat directly over the rear axle. Do the rich have more fun? That may depend on your satisfaction level.

  • The styling of this Roller is very much like a very famous Bugitti Royale I remember. I think the Bug belonged to one of the Domino Pizza brothers. Anybody willing to say which was the better car?
