As We See Things
by Philip Powell on August 22, 2007

It is difficult for me, living on the west coast, to appreciate the Woodward Dream Cruise. Cruising wasn't part of my automotive culture even though I was born and raised in Toronto, a mere 200 miles from Detroit and similar in many respects. Perhaps its my age or maybe it's because I got into sports cars, road racing, and rallying instead of rods and customs. So, sitting here reading about the event on my computer, I don't get it, although 1,000,000 spectators supposedly do. The photos make the Cruise look like nothing more than a 17-mile long traffic jam of old cars, many of them undistinguished except for the year they were made. However I'm always willing to admit when I'm wrong, which is where you come in. Check theCarConnection's coverage, as good as any on the Net, and in particular the photos. Decide if you agree, and tell us your view, using the "Comments" box below. Is the Cruise really a grand event or is it over-rated by media hype?

I've attended Woodward twice. I've also participated in small-town West Coast cruising. The difference, as I see it, is the West Coast cruising is a holdover from years past, when folks simply got together on the main drag with their favorite cars, whether they be hot rods, classics, pickups or tuners. They made no big deal about it, and it was very much a laid-back - almost somnolent - event. East Coast cruising - including Woodward - is much less frequent, something like once a year, and attendance is higher because nobody wants to miss their annual opportunity. I wouldn't say one's better than the other - just different flavors.
