They're Racing in San Francisco Again!

Once upon a time, when sports car road racing was still a novelty in America, San Francisco opened the roads of Golden Gate Park to a thrilling spectacle that drew throngs of spectators as well as future racing stars like Phil Hill, Ken Miles and Bill Stroppe. Like most races run on public streets, it was eventually deemed too dangerous to continue. But thanks to a charitable organization (the Guardsmen) and the San Francisco Region of the Sports Car Club of America, the Golden Gate Grand Prix will race again: On September 30 through October 1, the same 3.1-mile circuit that the 1952-1954 racers used will once more echo to the sounds of vintage motor racing. As reported by Vintage Motorsport magazine, the San Francisco Vintage Grand Prix promises a return to the past that might actually be better than the past ever was. Photo © Bob Canaan
