As much as possible, the organisers of the Tour d’Elegance at Pebble Beach try to group the entrants by make. Thus I had the privilege of watching eleven rare Ferraris of the 1950′s and 1960′s drive past, cars I’d only seen in static position at shows or in photographs. With the mists rolling in from the ocean and over the hills as background, it was almost dreamlike and only the sounds of those magnificent engines informed me that I was actually there. A few moments later and I was again awestruck, this time as several classic Packards appeared. The yellow car in the lead is a 1934 Packard 1108 Dietrich Runabout owned and driven by David E. Kane, followed by the Lyon Family’s 1934 Packard 1108 LeBaron Runabout Speedster. Unlike the Ferraris, the Packards were very, very quiet.
