British Cars
, Rolls-Royce
by Philip Powell on May 22, 2009

My field of dreams is filled with vintage automobiles, and so I was obviously in dreamland when surrounded by Rolls-Royce "motor cars" of all years and types at Vancouver's 2009 All British show. Just imagine being next to dozens of fine automobiles purchased originally by the rich and famous! Although I declare myself to preferring compact cars that can be tossed around by the seat of one's pants while conserving Mother Earth's precious fuels, I'd cheerfully surrender such principles to own and drive a vintage Rolls.
Presented with a staggering roster of British classics, I chose this Rolls-Royce Touring Limousine from the late 1930s. It wasn't the oldest nor the most luxurious but the lines are perfect and the two-tone paint job is exquisite. I doubt the colours exactly replicate the original but does that matter? The car comes with a 6-cylinder engine, easy-change gearbox, driver-adjustable shocks, 5-passenger seating with a chauffeur-divider window that can be lowered when the owner is at the wheel, sunroof, lifting jacks at each wheel, self-cancelling directional indicators, and more. Beautiful!

2009 Palos Verdes Tour d’Epicure Road Rallye Features Taste Treats and Peninsula Lighthouses
Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, June 8, 2009. - Each year a convoy of automobiles, some brand new, some more than 80 years old, winds its way around the Palos Verdes Peninsula as a precursor to the following day’s Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance at the Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes. Some of the cars are entries in the Concours.
Dubbed the Tour d’Epicure Road Rallye and sponsored by Farmers & Merchants Bank, this year’s Saturday, September 12 event begins with breakfast and ends with lunch at the golf club and features taste treats at scenic landmarks along the route.
The Rallye is themed “A Tale of Two Lights” and is described by the event’s chairman, Greg Sparkman, as “a historical tour de force that highlights two jewels of the Peninsula –the Point Vicente and Point Fermin lighthouses.
The Rallye is a timed event, and winners are determined by a combination of their check point times, and their answers to a fun quiz that incorporates questions about the route. A poker component provides additional chances to win prizes.
The cost of entry is $150 per vehicle, which covers the driver and navigator. Additional passengers cost $50 each.
Proceeds will benefit the community and outreach programs of the Palos Verdes Art Center and the Palos Verdes Peninsula Rotary Foundation. The Palos Verdes Concours d’Elegance is a 501 (c) (3) tax-deductible, non-profit charity.
The event is limited to 100 automobiles, and entries are now being accepted. Last year’s event was a sellout, according to Sparkman.
