Vintage Bimmer Wins Tough Newfie Rally

BMW 2002 at Targa

Always on the spot when it matters, the good folks at Hemmings got our attention with results from the Targa Newfoundland , a performance rally in Canada's far out (in the Atlantic) province. I'm especially pleased that the overall winners drove a 1969 BMW 2002, a year younger than a BMW I once purchased new and still one of my all-time favorites. It was the first win for Roy Hopkins and Adrienne Hughes of Spencerport, NY who, last year, had finished fifth. As Mike McNessor wrote in the Hemmings newsletter: "Hopkins' and Hughes' win in their vintage BMW is remarkable considering they had to outperform a field of tough late-model cars, including factory efforts backed by Mazda, Lexus, MINI and Subaru." Well, heck, I used to beat all sorts of bigger and faster cars through the last curve from the Major Deegan expressway leading to New York City's Triborough Bridge, so I'm not surprised. Congratulations, guys, but I do wish you'd do something about that paint job. Where's the dignity?
