Ted's Garage Blog on ClassicCar.com has an amusing commentary on the "first Mustang." Apparently the owner of number 212 is convinced it was the first production Mustang and is asking $5 million. Say what? Frankly I find this fascination with owning the first of anything to be a little silly; after all, it looks, drives and feels just like the 10,000th car off the line so who cares? Worth a few extra bucks for the novelty, maybe, but that's it. I have quite a few firsts in my past but never got to keep them. Thanks to friends at the British Motor Corporation I became the first North American journalist to test the original Mini. And prior to the Mustang's launch was first outsider to drive a pre-production version, in this case at Ford's proving grounds. I still recall a hubcap rolling down the track after tossing the vehicle through a corner as if it was a sports car. That's also when I learned that track-testing a car a few minutes after having breakfast is not a good idea.
