Winding Roads Wanted, Soon

The Winding Road

Everyone has their favorite winding road, whether it be in a dream vacation or close to home base. While working in Toronto my favorite roads existed on BC's Vancouver Island, many so delectable that, as a copywriter, I used them in a Pontiac brochure. Sadly, the Island's population and tourist visitations have grown so quickly that most of those roads are now clogged with traffic. Nevertheless you might be interested in contributing to the virtual Winding Road magazine's feature My Winding Roads wherein the editor lists a couple of his favorites and invites you to add yours.

Based on experience my "personal bests" would include LA's Mulholland Drive (for short bursts); the Amalfi coast road in Italy; California's legendary Hwy 1; the renowned Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island; portions of the old Route 66 in Nevada; almost anywhere north of Lulea in Sweden in winter (four hours of sunshine, icy roads with no salt); the Autobahn (for short high-speed bursts); France's Route Napoléan; and my girlfriend's driveway. No, scratch that… I no longer have a girlfriend and if I find one I hope she has one of those tree-lined curving drives leading up to the chateau where I can demonstrate 4-wheel-drifts in her vintage Rolls-Royce.

Fantasies aside, I suspect Winding Road's editor sees this as an opportunity to increase readership while appealing to his sense of romance. And why not? Classical Drives has viewers from all over the world and who's to say that equally great winding roads don't exist in China, India, South Africa and New Zealand? If you know of any get in touch with the editor and add to what could become a depository of roads worth driving. Hurry… while they last!
