Vintage Racing

The Italian Grand Prix is not the only exciting event that takes place at Monza each year. Indeed, the last round of the Shell Ferrari Historic Challenge is possibly more entertaining. The Challenge is a European vintage racing series open to historic Ferrari and Maserati sports cars and single seaters, with a special invitation extended to pre-war Alfa Romeos that were raced by the Commandatore's Scuderia before there was a Ferrari automobile. Each year several restored race cars join the grid for the first time, and this year it was the 1961 special-bodied Ferrari 250GT SWB known as the Breadvan. Not a very glamorous name for a famous sports-Racer, it came from the body design which, though shaped for aerodynamic purposes, reminded people of the vans that delivered our daily bread. Remember them? With two days of competition involving some very fast drivers, plus those glorious 6-cylinder and V-12 sounds, Monza would be a fun place for a weekend break next October.
