You May Never Be a Royal but Here’s Your Chance to Crown a Monarch

Mercury Monarch

"What," you may be wondering, is a "monarch?" I'd almost forgotten myself, so many years having passed since I first drove one. A Monarch, for the benefit of our American viewers and a good many younger Canadians, too, is a Ford wearing a fancy hat. Drawing from a population roughly 10% of the USA, Canadian Mercury dealers could not survive on upmarket Mercs and Lincolns alone and needed an entry-level vehicle in their showrooms. So Ford of Canada dressed its line in Mercury trim and created an all-new marque called Monarch. In 1956 a mere 163 examples of the convertible were produced, one of which will be sold at RM's Toronto auction in the International Centre, April 4th to 6th. It's been completely restored and is powered by the "Y-block" 312 c.i. V-8 with Merc-O-Matic automatic. Options include power steering, power brakes, windshield washers, spotlights, driving lights, radio, clock, heater, and power top. RM is offering many other gems in its Toronto auction but this is the one that grabbed my heart.
